Port Isabel Butthead Scow Sloop
7/15/2014

I got involved with some friends who want to recreate the historic scows of the Texas Gulf Coast. I have no intention of building one of these, I just want to put the data out there in case anyone has an interest.

What I have done is scale the original plans down to a boat less than 14' long (you don't have to register sailboats shorter than 14' in Texas - here in Oregon, the minimum length is 12'.) I took the resulting drawing and put the data into the Hull Designer program by Carlson Designs (freeware.) I then took the results of Hull Designer and put that into a drawing program to get the cut plan and offsets.

Here's the PIS_2 .HUL file I created. Feel free to play with it as much as you like.

If you use this cutplan, you will chop up (4) sheets of plywood and end up with a bare hull, no bulkheads, no seats, no nothing but bits of the boat that touch the water. The rest is up to you.

I have included (2) sail plans, one a direct scaling from the original drawing, the other a more sensible plan for a boat that size that is used for recreation, not commercial activity. Placement of the sails is up to you - where you put them affects where you put your lee/center/daggerboard. Read this essay on Sail Area Math by Jim Michalak, understand it, do the math, and place your foils appropriately.

These drawings and cutplan are offered for information use only - I have no idea if it will actually work. Use at your own risk, and if you have any doubts, don't use them at all.
